  • 要求政府進行獨立調查,反映市民堅信問責(無論係對維修公司或政府官員);
  • 反對圍標,反映市民要求公開公平嘅程序;
  • 質疑圍網違規,反映市民追求法治(履行維修合約、執行安全規定);
  • 譴責維修商使用廉價易燃物料,反映市民要求質素,重視生命高於金錢;

MVHK Statement on the Tai Po Tragedy: Cherishing Hong Kong Culture, Upholding Universal Values

The fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has caused one of the most serious losses of life and property in Hong Kong in recent years. We offer our deepest condolences to all the victims, and we pay our highest respects to the frontline rescue personnel. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones, and we hope they will find support and strength during this time of grief.

As an organisation of Hongkongers based in Australia, MVHK is responding out of our firm commitment to fundamental human values: that human life must come before monetary and political interests. This tragedy has exposed a number of systemic problems, including a lack of transparency in approval processes, avoidance of fire-safety requirements, weak regulatory oversight, the absence of accountability among officials, and the suppression of community voices and civic action.

Following the fire at Wang Fuk Court, the responses from Hong Kong society have included:

  • Calls for an independent investigation, reflecting citizens’ belief in accountability — whether for repair contractors or government officials;
  • Opposition to bid-rigging, reflecting the public’s expectation of open and fair procedures;
  • Concerns over illegal enclosure material, reflecting the public’s demand for the rule of law — including compliance with maintenance contracts and enforcement of safety standards;
  • Condemnation of contractors’ use of cheap and flammable materials, reflecting the demand for quality and the principle that life must be valued above profit;
  • Widespread mourning and voluntary community support, reflecting citizens’ exercise of their rights to express views and participate in public affairs.

These are the universal values that Hongkongers have long upheld and that we continue to advocate.

In recent years, universal values have been politicised and portrayed as a pretext used by the West to attack China. However, the public response in Hong Kong this time clearly demonstrates that universal values are shared across cultures and borders, and represent ideals common to all humanity.

As an organisation of Hongkongers in Australia, MVHK aims to preserve, develop, and promote a Hong Kong culture grounded in these universal values.

In light of the above, MVHK makes the following two calls:

  1. We urge the Hong Kong SAR Government to promptly establish an independent Commission of Inquiry with statutory powers under Cap. 86, the Commissions of Inquiry Ordinance, and to invite international experts to serve as members of the Commission. The Commission should clarify the full circumstances of the incident, identify official responsibility and systemic shortcomings, operate transparently, and be safeguarded from political interference in its investigative process.
  2. We call on the international community to continue monitoring the developments that follow, particularly with regard to press freedom and freedom of expression, and to guard against citizens being subjected to unjust political reprisals for calling for accountability.
